According to Dan Miller, a senior analyst and founder of voice-centric research firm Opus Research Inc. in San Francisco, voice biometrics could grab as much as a quarter of the estimated $500 million total biometric market over the next five years. Last year, he said, spending on such equipment was in the tens of millions.

Miller said the market is not ruled by a single behemoth. Small companies, like Chicago’s Authentify Inc. and Voice.Trust AG in Germany are making advances in the industry, said Miller, while local voice technology software maker Nuance Communications Inc. also includes voice-authentication among its offerings.

Some large companies may also be waiting in the wings.

“Don’t forget, this is an area of expertise for IBM,” said Miller.
