On the Road to Speech-Enabled Mobile Search (SEMS)

by Dan Miller

Two major initiatives in Speech-Enabled Mobile Search (SEMS) are gaining traction in the U.S. One is the expansion in Tellme Networks’ role as enhanced directory assistance platform for Cingular. The other brings together Canadian speech-processing specialist, Call Genie, as it trials new service offerings and business models in partnership with Verizon Information Services and Verizon LiveSource.

Automated speech specialists have an important part to play in popularizing new search services that leverage directory databases while expanding modes of delivery and associated features and services. The two initiatives represent major strides toward popularizing new SEMS services and creating sustainable business models that embrace ‘free,’ caller-paid, advertiser-based, transactional services.
