June 6 saw a cascade of very interesting announcements emanating from San Diego, headquarters city for KnuEdge™ Inc., formerly called Intellisis. The wraps came off of this stealth venture as it introduced new “neural technologies” that support, among other things, accurate speech recognition and voice biometric-based authentication. The company earned press coverage that spanned the financial, technology and general interest press because it was founded by Dan Goldin, a world-renowned technology innovator and former NASA administrator Dan Goldin.

The umbrella announcement carried the headline, “KnuEdge Unveils Breakthrough Technology That Will Unleash Innovation in Voice Biometrics and Human-Machine Interaction.” That makes the company an exciting addition to a small roster of firms that support both Intelligent Assistance, by promising highly accurate (so-called “military grade) voice recognition, and Intelligent Authentication, using voice biometrics-based speaker authentication, even in noisy environments. The implications for businesses that want to provide simple, secure, personal and ubiquitous connections with their customers that span multiple locations, devices and use cases are profound.

The voice recognition and authentication technology carries the brand name KnuVerse™. It benefits from the “ground up” approach that KnuEdge has taken to building a technology platform that addresses the core problem of separating spoken words from background noise and then associating those words with specific speakers. These are tasks that KnuEdge (under the Intellisis brand) has taken on for military-grade applications for a number of years and is now able to introduce into the commercial marketplace.

The decloaking of KnuEdge and launch of KnuVerse directly benefits developers, partners and integrators that work with Knurld, which is the cloud-based, developer friendly flavor of the KnuVerse product platform. It highlights the fact that the core technology works well and has been in use for many years to support government and military efforts. It also showcases the track record of Dan Goldin, one of the most well-respected technology gurus and investors on the planet.

The growth of digital commerce that crosses multiple devices invites the cloud-based approach. Amazon’s Alexa has already expanded beyond Echo to include Echo, Dot and Tap. Google Assistant will span all manner of hardware including Echo’s direct competitor, Google Home. And now Apple has “opened up” Siri to the app developer community and assured us that its macOS will bring the voice-based assistant to its MacBooks. Rapid recognition of who’s speaking will create a much better user experience because it can be personalized and secure. The voice processing technologies in KnuVerse hold great promise in this domain. Developers should take note.
