The neat thing about the era of Recombinant Communications is that there are very few “either-or” choices to make. As a case in point, Twilio has joined the Google Cloud Platform Partner Program. By their own account, it makes them the first provider of an API through which Google’s community of developers can integrate SMS text messaging and voice calling into their applications. More to the point, Google-based phone apps can now be mash-ups that merge Twilio’s inexpensive text and call-processing, with some of the long-standing goodies in Google Voice (dating back to the days of Grand Central).

The combination of Twilio and Google enables developers who have focused on building Web services using the Google App Engine to add in-app call origination (aka dialing), conference calling, group texting, mobile app distribution and text-based two-factor authentication. Twilio’s platform already supported rudimentary IVR, call recording and voice transcription. To encourage Google App Engine users to incorporate Twilio’s capabilities into their wares, Twilio extends an offer of 2,000 free SMS messages (worth $20) to individuals who upgrade their account to include the Twilio API.

Partnering with Cloud-based Web Service providers is in Twilio’s DNA. It has similar relationships with Amazon Web Services (where it got its start) and with Microsoft Azure users.
